St Louis, Self-Compassion for Moms and Teen Daughters

July 14, 2018

Workshop 2: Befriending Every Part of Us (Including the Inner-Critic!)

It is undeniable that being a mom or a teen in today’s world are two of the trickiest roles in life to navigate. While the transition into the adolescent years brings so much joy and exciting new experiences, it can also come with many challenges that result in inevitable changes in the relationship between mom and daughter. With these changes often comes a compelling invitation to fall into self-judgment and self-criticism.

We were not meant to do this alone! We all need support on this journey, and connecting with a community can be empowering. While these years can be hard and overwhelming, they do not have to be years of disconnection.

Group Facilitators

For over ten years, Kelly Caul, MSW, LCSW has been working to guide women and teen girls to rediscover their most authentic Selves, befriend emotions, reclaim their voice, and create strong communities.

Kristy Arbon, BA (Psych), BSW, Cert. MSC has been practicing mindfulness and meditation for 30 years and added self-compassion to her practice 6 years ago – she’s been teaching self-compassion skills to groups and individuals since 2013.

In 2013, Kelly and Kristy met at an Internal Family Systems Level 1 training in St Louis, Missouri, and from that shared passion, self-compassion training for moms and teens was born.

The Program

This workshop series is for moms and their daughters aged 12-18. Gather some tools to help you tend to your emotions through transitions and changing relationship dynamics. We will spend time reconnecting to our inner wisdom while also discovering ways to build a more empowered relationship. In this group training series, Kelly and Kristy will offer two workshops designed to educate and support teen daughters and their moms/guardians/grandmothers on how to practice self-compassion both for oneself and within the mother/daughter relationship.

On July 14, together we’ll explore topics including:

  • Redefining our relationship with self-criticism
  • Exploring the notion that ‘all parts of us are welcome’ – how to honor this in yourself and in your mom/daughter
  • Finding the calm in the storm of emotions

Click here for information about the June 16 workshop. The workshops will be highly experiential, bringing together talks, meditations, exercises, and group discussions both in the large group and in smaller peer groups of moms and teens.

You’ll leave this training with:

  • a greater understanding about how your mom/daughter is feeling and what motivates her,
  • practices to use to tend to difficult emotions in relationship,
  • strategies to use when you are struggling to express yourself in relationship with your mom/daughter, and
  • the knowledge that you are not alone in your experience.

Dates

We will meet on two Saturday afternoons on June 16 (Strengthening Connections and Establishing Healthy Boundaries) and July 14 (Befriending Every Part of Us (Including the Inner-Critic!)) from 1-4pm. Option to register for both workshop dates or for just one workshop date. The workshops will be limited to 12 mother/daughter/guardian/grandmother family groups.
