Somatic Self-Compassion Weekly Practice Cycle offers a weekly video leading you through the Somatic Self-Compassion® (SSC) curriculum. We will explore each of the 15 topics from SSC over 12 months, starting at any point in the year, taking our time to immerse ourselves in regular study, practice, and reflection. This is an opportunity to establish and deepen your mindfulness, embodiment, and self-compassion practice through exploring the SSC material at a structured, easeful pace. You’ll be invited to explore the material at your own pace through the week, supported by weekly emails inviting you into each of the 52 weeks of the program. (Previously the SSC Weekly Practice Cycle started in January and ended in December with one cohort of learners working their way through the material. Now, you can start the program at any time and explore the material at your leisure, with email support from your teacher, Kristy Arbon.)

Results of a study done in collaboration with Hendrix College found that after 13 weeks of SSC, participants’ coping self-efficacy, self-esteem, and self-compassion increased while their levels of shame, perceived stress, and body shame decreased. Our aim in the Weekly Practice Cycle is to further enhance these benefits. Folks who have been exploring this material for a year or more report that the benefits to their self-development have taken time and that the commitment to their practice has paid off in ways they wouldn’t have imagined in the early months of their work.

Kristy Arbon is the developer and facilitator of the SSC program. Kristy has been teaching mindfulness and self-compassion skills to individuals and groups for 15 years. She developed SSC in response to a need for a body-based self-compassion curriculum that helps to motivate self-compassion practice in daily life. The SSC Weekly Practice Cycle was birthed in response to an identified need for practitioners to explore the material in regular cycles, in more depth, with more time.

Kristy is passionate about embodied, trauma-informed self-compassion and mindfulness training. She is a Certified Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) Teacher and a member of the UCSD Center for Mindfulness Mindfulness-Based Professional Training Institute. She is a member of the Dedicated Practitioner Program with David Treleaven‘s Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness Community and she has completed the Advanced Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness training program. She has offered self-compassion workshops and retreats online and in the US, Singapore, Bhutan, Brazil, New Zealand and Australia.

Kristy adapted the MSC program for the online environment, creating Live Online MSC for the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion, and designed and implemented the first MSC Teacher Training online learning support platform. She has also helped develop online learning programs for the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy (Certificate Program in Mindfulness and Psychotherapy) and InnerKids (Inner Kids Professional Development Program).

She is delighted to take up this opportunity to share self-compassion study and practice with you!

SSC is a body-focussed skills training program designed to give you the knowledge and tools to listen to your body and respond with compassion to live more intentionally and easefully in the world. In this non-clinical program (i.e., not group therapy) training will be offered in three stages (called journeys), sequenced in a way so that each component builds on the last.

Journey 1: Motivating Somatic Self-Compassion

This 4-month journey is designed to set the foundation for a self-compassion practice through learning what Somatic Self-Compassion is and how self-compassion practice fits in with your sense of purpose, your goals, your strengths, and the ways you can naturally motivate yourself. We will spend time reflecting on our personal preferences and style so that we have a good sense of how to bring more intentional self-compassion to our daily life.

Journey 2: Developing Somatic Self-Compassion

This 6-month journey is designed to introduce you to the body and the neurochemicals that affect how we feel; inform you on ways to develop an understanding of messages from your body; normalize the mechanisms of stress; assist you to practice self-care through self-compassion; and introduce you to sensory modulation (tending to our stress through our senses).

Journey 3: Practicing Through Connecting

This 2-month journey is designed to support your ongoing Somatic Self-Compassion practice through identifying and fostering sources of personal pleasure and wellbeing; connecting practice to your sense of spirituality; strengthening community bonds for continuing practice connections; and creating rituals for practice beyond the program.

When

You can start this program at any time. At the start of each week you’ll receive an email with a link to a video that will lead you through a meditation, guided reflection, and study material.

How

Training is facilitated through:

  • pre-recorded video (around 60 minutes each) of talks, meditations, exercises, reflection invitations, and self-inquiry prompts lead by Kristy;
  • the Somatic Self-Compassion Companion Notes, a downloadable, printable workbook that offers all of the material we’ll be exploring, with space for recording personal reflections;
  • email support by your teacher.

What you will get:

  • cutting edge theory, concepts, and research about the mechanisms of stress and relief in the body;
  • a comprehensive toolkit of practices and exercises to set you firmly on the path to being more self-compassionate;
  • ongoing practice support by Kristy Arbon for as long as you need it.

You can check out the video format for the Weekly Practice Cycle by watching the Topic 1 video below:

Practices included:

Please check out the “Meditation Topics” menu item under the “Somatic Self-Compassion” menu in the menu bar above for examples of practices we’ll be invited to explore through the program.

Trauma-Informed

This training implements the trauma-informed approach outlined by the US National Center for Trauma-Informed Care in that it is designed with these guiding principles in mind. In implicit and explicit ways it aims to help us:

  1. Realize the widespread impact of trauma;
  2. Recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma;
  3. Understand potential roads for recovery;
  4. Respond by fully integrating knowledge about trauma into policies, procedures, and practices; and
  5. Seek to actively resist re-traumatization.

Investment
