Pennsylvania: Our Lady of Guadalupe: A Mother Goddess of Hope and Inclusion
June 8, 2017 - June 11, 2017
Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to a pious Mexican man at a time when his people desperately needed to feel seen and heard. Colonial forces had silenced the Mexican people: when a group in any culture is silenced, not seen, not heard, this leads to a sense of shame – I don’t belong here, I am not welcome, my voice is not heard, I am not seen. Our Lady said, “I see you,” “I hear you,” “You belong here,” offering hope for a community feeling oppressed and disenfranchised.
This message is very relevant for us today. So many groups in our society do not have a voice, and our culture is potentially moving in the direction of further polarization, further shaming, further invisibility. We need Our Lady’s message; we need to make sure everyone feels seen and heard.
This is a secular workshop exploring the archetype of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
